Jaheira, Friend of the Forest (2024)

I think you should be okay with the Populate & Offspring on the card as is right now. 4 mana, tapping Eda, & tapping 2 other creatures isn't super steep, but restrictive enough to keep it interesting.

I think your Populate also curves nicely as a play the turn after Eda drops. With how mana intensive Offspring can get, you'll probably be initially limited to either doing Offspring or Populating off Eda, until you drop something like Jaheira, Friend of the Forest.

I could see Eda also have an interesting Lifegain variant with stuff like Myriad (Hammers of Moradin) to get bang for your buck on token production & Lifegain. Offspring your Myriad folks so their Offspring have Myriad, & really roll in life gain.

So I'll be honest and say that I'm a total outsider to the food deck archetype, so I'm no expert. I'll make some suggestions of cards that I like and that excite me.

Kami of Whispered Hopes seems like a bomb and Jaheira, Friend of the Forest could turn your food into mox emeralds. Yotian Dissident Gyre Sage Incubation Druid Shalai and Hallar Three Visits

A lot of LOTR stuff would work too Peregrin Took The Shire Samwise Gamgee Sam, Loyal Attendant

I hate to suggest cuts, so I'll leave that up to you. I will say that you seem to be trying to do a lot of things, maybe think about cutting out some of the sub themes, and try to work on the top end of your curve because it's still quite high

Some thoughts:

  • both Thriving Grove and Jaheira, Friend of the Forest are not modern legal.

  • ideally most of your cards should be playsets (4-ofs). By running soo many cards as 1-ofs and 2-ofs, your deck is going to be super inconsistent and overall much weaker. A good deckbuilding tip for newer players is to pick 9 cards, and run playsets of each of those (making 36 cards) alongside 24 lands (for a 60 card deck).

  • Your mana curve is also very high. Generally decks can’t justify running more than 4 cards costing 4 mana, and run nothing above this cost. Even decks very heavy on ramp effects (a LOT more than what this deck is currently running) generally can’t justify having more than 6-8 cards costing 4-or-more mana (and generally don’t go above 6-7 mana).

  • the above mentioned issue is going to be made a lot worse due to you having nothing to do on turn 1, meaning that you’re always starting a full turn behind your opponent - a really dangerous place to be.

Considering:

  • Fae Offering
++ Introduces a fun little minigame. ++ Exciting with Academy Manufactor
-- Unable to trigger on opponents' turns without flash creatures, but that's minor
  • Victimize
++ Pet reanimation spell, fantastic with with tokens
  • Invasion of Ikoria Flip (+ maybe Vampire Hexmage)
-- Can't fetch amazing humans (Yawgmoth, Thran Physician, Species Specialist, Eternal Witness, Pitiless Plunderer, Jaheira, Friend of the Forest)
++ Less salt-inducing wincon than Natural Order->Craterhoof Behemoth or a giant Finale of Devastation
++ Battles are a fun minigame when not fetching Hexmage
-- Hexmage is lackluster on its own
-- Not as guaranteed of a win condition as a big Finale
-- The Invasion being a permanent opens it up to removal before it flips
  • Llanowar Elves et al
++ Get Chatterfang out on turn 2 to start going ham sooner
  • Nested Shambler back in
++ BB to double your squirrel count still seems good
  • Force of Vigor
++ Creature spot removal is shored up by Chatterfang and all other removal spells hit creatures, so might be reasonable to have this not
++ Probably better in-slot than Binding the Old Gods

Potential cuts:

  • Craterhoof Behemoth
== If Invasion of Ikoria Flip goes in
++ Cutting makes Natural Order worse, but also no longer as groan-inducing
  • Finale of Devastation
== If Invasion of Ikoria Flip goes in
  • Witch's Oven
++ Cheap sac outlet that works with Academy Manufactor and Gilded Goose -- Slow and food otherwise sucks.
-- The bonus only really happens if Chitterspitter has gone up several times
++ Is fetchable with Urza's Saga, but it's the worst option of the current three. Always fetch Skullclamp over this.
  • Tireless Tracker
    -- Second-worst token maker behind Witch's Oven
-- Only eight fetchlands + Binding the Old Gods and Growing Rites of Itlimoc Flip to double-trigger
++ Does qualify as a (slow) draw engine
    ++ Works with Academy Manufactor
  • Binding the Old Gods
-- Worst ramp and worst removal
++ Removal count is still moderately low, though. Can't rely on Chatterfang's ability for everything.
-- Probably worse in slot than Force of Vigor
  • Saw in Half
++ Does function as bad protection against spot removal -- Not a lot of nonlegendary creatures worth copying that don't already win the game, so often dead
    Eternal Witness
    Tireless Provisioner
    Tireless Tracker
    Species Specialist
    Grim Hireling
    Academy Manufactor
    Tendershoot Dryad
    Nadier's Nightblade
    Deep Forest Hermit
-- Even when there is a target, often win-more

FormOverFunction Too true : ) Not only are there way more commanders, but ones that have ultra-specific abilities so there is that wider range of what's possible, but at the same time, almost more limited ways to play an individual commander. Something like Jaheira, Friend of the Forest (ha, I am replaying BG2 so this is what comes to mind) but Jaheria is so specific as a commander that your build is stuck between either being the same as every other Jaheria deck, or being something that's completely better suited for another commander.

But the more I think about it, I'm realizing that my post might be way off too. When I'm building decks I always start with a commander I want to use and go from there, so my process takes the meta less into account than the want to figure out the puzzle that is a commander I like.

Things I'd consider more staples are like

Llanowar Elves

Counterspell

Tragic Slip

Lightning Bolt

Arcane Signet

Grand Abolisher

Necropotence

Guardian of Faith

Mind Stone

and some of the MDFC cards

Not because every deck needs to run them, but because every time you draw them you will absolutely use them that game.
