Who is Beaufort County SC named for? ›

You'd be forgiven for thinking that Beaufort was founded by the French, too, with its French-sounding name, but it was actually settled by the English and named after Henry Somerset, the Duke of Beaufort.

It is an historical city, founded in 1711. It has maintained its antebellum architecture and small town atmosphere.

It must have been the winter doldrums that caused Beaufort to adopt “The Lettuce City” as its nickname in 1926. The residents who voted in that contest put on by the city must have been anxiously awaiting the fresh, crisp lettuce that would come in the early spring.

Hilton Head Island is the largest city, and Beaufort is the county seat. Area 587 square miles (1,520 square km). Pop. (2000) 120,937; (2010) 162,233.

History of Lady's Island

Originally called Combahee Island, the island's name was changed in 1698 by Royal Governor Joseph Blake. He renamed it to honor his wife, Elizabeth Axtell Blake, whose mother, Lady Rebecca Axtell, owned Newington Plantation in present-day Summerville.

"The Westoe tribe lived in what became Beaufort district. They were driven out at an early period by the Savannahs, or Yamassees, who belonged to the Lower Creek Nation" (A Sketch of the History of South Carolina, Rivers, McCarter & Co., Charleston, 1856, p87, 88).

Established as Charles Town in honor of King Charles II of England, Charleston adopted its present name in 1783 and is the principal city in the Charleston–North Charleston–Summerville Metropolitan Statistical Area.
